Hardened in Millenia
Fossilised resin, that is older than one million years,
is called amber. The work shown consists of baltic amber.
This comes from the Baltic and is roughly between 40 and 60
million years old. That is why its chemical and
mechanical stability is surprisingly high. That,
together with great deftness and sensitivity for the
material enables the execution of fine detail.
Attractive Material
The skill of working a sculpture out of a rough
piece consists in preserving as much of the
precious material as possible. It is also necessary
to integrate in advance the individual features of
the piece, such as inclusions, the charming weathered
surface, metallic accumulations, attractive cracks or
bubbles into the creative process. That means that the
artist has to envision the finished form in the
amorphous raw piece.
